What I Do

Over 16 years of designing and leading hiking experiences specifically for mature adults

Trail Design & Route Planning

I create sustainable, accessible hiking routes across Kerry, Wicklow, Connemara, and the Mourne Mountains. Each trail is designed with older hikers in mind — considering pace, terrain difficulty, rest points, and genuine enjoyment.

Hiking Guides & Education

I write comprehensive guides that demystify hiking for beginners. My 2018 Kerry guide gained recognition across the hiking and senior wellness communities. I'm focused on practical, evidence-based advice that actually works.

Group Guidance

I've guided over 2,500 individuals aged 45+ on trails throughout Ireland. My approach combines safety protocols with genuine encouragement, recognizing that each person's hiking journey is different.

Age-Appropriate Training

I specialize in understanding how hiking needs shift after 45. From physical conditioning to pacing strategies to managing common concerns — I've built expertise that actually addresses mature hikers' real situations.

Environmental Stewardship

With a background in environmental conservation, I'm committed to sustainable hiking practices. Every route I design respects the landscape and teaches hikers how to explore responsibly.

Content Development

As Content Lead at willowpartners Limited, I create detailed, practical content about beginner-friendly hiking. I combine thousands of hours on Irish trails with evidence-based guidance to help others discover the outdoors confidently.

My Approach to Hiking Guidance

What drives my work and how I help mature adults discover Ireland's landscapes

Age Shouldn't Limit Adventure

My passion for hiking started as a kid exploring the Comeragh Mountains near Waterford, but I didn't pursue it professionally until my early thirties. That timing matters. I understand what it's like to discover or rediscover outdoor pursuits later in life — and I know that some of life's greatest adventures genuinely come in your fifth decade and beyond.

The breakthrough that shaped my career came around 2015 when I realized something obvious but important: adults over 45 don't need the same hiking experience as twenty-year-olds. We've got different physical needs, different interests, and different safety considerations. Instead of just taking younger routes and making them "easier," I started designing from scratch — trails that are genuinely enjoyable for mature hikers, not just scaled-down versions of something else.

Practical Guidance Over Hype

You won't find me talking about "unlocking your potential" or "transforming your life through hiking." That's not how this works. What I do is combine thousands of hours on Irish trails with evidence-based advice about what actually makes hiking sustainable, enjoyable, and safe for older adults.

I'm interested in real questions: What pace works for someone returning to hiking after years away? How do you manage knee pain on descent? When should you take a break? What makes a trail genuinely beginner-friendly? These are the conversations I have with hikers constantly, and they shape everything I write and teach.

Environmental Responsibility Built In

My background in environmental conservation isn't separate from my hiking work — it's woven through everything. Every route I design considers the landscape's resilience. Every group I lead learns sustainable hiking practices. We're not just enjoying Ireland's mountains; we're protecting them for the next generation of hikers.

"Age shouldn't limit outdoor exploration. My job is to demystify hiking for mature adults and prove that some of life's greatest adventures come in your fifth decade and beyond."

Key Insights About Hiking After 45

Pace Matters More Than Distance

A 3-mile hike at a comfortable pace is infinitely better than a 5-mile push that leaves you exhausted. I design routes where the speed is built in, not something you're fighting against.

Rest Points Are Part of the Route

Strategic benches, flat sections, and viewpoints aren't afterthoughts — they're essential design elements. A good rest point at mile 1.5 means the difference between enjoyment and struggle.

Descent Technique Prevents Knee Strain

Most hikers know how to go up. Coming down is where problems start. Proper technique, the right footwear, and understanding your limits makes a huge difference in how you feel the next day.

Confidence Builds Gradually

Someone returning to hiking after 20 years needs different support than a lifelong athlete. Success comes from starting manageable and building from there — not jumping into something that feels impossible.

Weather and Conditions Matter

A trail that's beautiful in summer might be treacherous in winter. I provide seasonal guidance because hiking safely means understanding how routes change throughout the year.

Community Makes a Difference

Hiking with others who get where you're coming from changes everything. Over 2,500 hikers I've guided have experienced this — you're not struggling alone, and everyone's on a similar journey.
